PETS
FREEDOM !

Choose a day when you are at home to let the cat out for the first time . Do not feed the cat before opening the door . Most cats will be cautious at first and will not rush out . They will take their time to decide if it is safe and will then slowly explore their new surroundings . Allow them to investigate at their own pace and do not pick them up and carry them around . They might struggle and panic , even if they are used to being carried inside the house . Let them look around thoroughly and do not worry if they , for example , jump over a fence . Most cats will return after a few minutes , and you can offer them food .

Confident cats that love the outdoors usually adapt well . Shy cats will benefit from you accompanying them outside for the first few days until they get used to the new environment and build confidence .

THE CAT RETURNS

What if your old house is nearby and your cat encounters its old routes ? If it has not yet bonded with the new house , it might follow the old route back . If the cat repeatedly returns to the old house , keep it indoors for a month . Feed it frequently and give plenty of attention . Use signals , like specific sounds for meal times , which you can later use to call the cat home . For the first few weeks , let the cat out once a day just before meal times to prevent it from wandering too far . The aim is to make the new house the centre of its territory , a place that smells familiar and safe , and is the source of food and shelter . In some cases , it may take weeks or months before a cat can be left outside unsupervised .

With good preparation and enough adjustment time , your cat should feel at home in its new environment fairly quickly . Good luck with the move !
