TRAVELLING WITH YOUR CAT

Transport your cat in a sturdy , well-made carrier . Boxes , even those designed for cat transport , are not completely safe , and the cat can escape . Secure the carrier with a seatbelt in the vehicle to prevent movement .

Ensure proper ventilation , and do not place the cat in the boot , although the basket can be placed in the hatchback area , ensuring it is secure and ventilated . A loose cat can distract the driver and may get injured or escape . Do not transport the cat in the furniture van .

For long journeys , provide food , water , and toilet breaks by placing the cat ’ s carrier in a larger dog crate with room for bowls and a litter tray .

Never leave the cat in a closed car , or even an open car , when you stop , as vehicles reach dangerous high temperatures within minutes .

It is better to carry the cat with you or have someone stay with the cat in the shade with all the car windows open . Ensure the carrier is properly secured .

You can consult a vet about a sedative if the journey is long or the cat is very nervous . Ensure your cat is healthy and that all vaccinations and deworming are up to date a few weeks before the move .
