MANAGEMENT
Combating Burnout In Our Multi-Family World
BY ANNALISA LAVOIE
If you ’ re working in multi-family , you ’ ve likely become accustomed to juggling many things at one time . We work in high-stress environments , and there are a lot of moving parts – from dealing with residents , managing maintenance requests , handling paperwork ( or apps ), and staying on top of market trends ( and in Denver , don ’ t forget all those legislative updates ). Demands can pile up quickly , and there is constant pressure to ensure things keep running smoothly . You may feel stress build ( or a constant feeling of being overwhelmed ) and you ’ re drained physically and emotionally . This may be burnout , and trust me , you ’ re not alone .
In a 2024 Indeed survey , 52 % of workers reported burnout , a 9 % increase from before the COVID-19 pandemic . Survey respondents noted The Never-Ending-To-Do List , Stress of the Job , Lack of Support and Work-Life Imbalance as their primary reasons for experiencing burnout .
Okay , so we ’ re not alone ( and we agree it ’ s not fun ), but what can we do to address burnout for ourselves and our team members .
Set Boundaries
There are many days multi-family isn ’ t a 9-5 job . The maintenance emergency often comes when you ’ ve shut down for the night , and the pressure to always be “ available ” can become standard in our roles . It ’ s crucial you set limits ( whether it ’ s telling residents the routine request happens within business hours or giving yourself a rule to not answer work emails after 7PM ). Small boundaries will assist in not feeling like you ’ re being pulled in a million directions .
