Step 2
Step 1
Starting with a chilled buttercream base ( I am using Sky Blue by Colourmill for the base ), use Loyal tip 6B to pipe a ( white ) shell border around the base of the cake . Ensure medium pressure whilst piping your buttercream . Start with the tip touching the cake board and as the buttercream exits , lift the tip upwards and back down in a smooth motion . Try to keep a 45 degree angle whilst piping the whole way around the base .
Choose a cookie cutter that suits the shape and length of swag you ’ re wanting to pipe on the sides of the cake and gently press into the side of the cake to make your markings . I am using the 4 ” wide Loyal cookie cutter . Try to use no more than half the circumference of the cookie cutter to ensure a fluid look around the cake . I always start from the front of my cake and work from both directions to make sure the front will look even and uniform . If the markings don ’ t match up perfectly at the back , don ’ t stress . We can pipe a bit extra swag to join the open ends of the markings .
