Clackamas sheriff ’ s offi ce leasing boathouse to increase presence
General Manager Jim Meierotto announced at the February CCC Board meeting that CCC and Clackamas County Sheriff ’ s Office have reached
SWITZER an agreement for the leasing of the boat house at the Charbonneau Marina to CCSO . The five-year agreement provides an increased law enforcement presence here in Charbonneau , as well as on the river . There have been an increase in thefts and vandalism over the past few years and having a Marine Patrol Unit at our marina will be a great deterrent . The agreement comes after the board moved away from basing the proposed paddle club at the boathouse . Instead , storage and security for paddle boards and kayaks will be included in the overall marina plan at a much lower cost . The entire boat-dock structure is scheduled for replacement at the end of this season . The marina is selffunded and the replacement costs are already set aside in the marina ’ s reserve fund .
SB 1589
On the subject of the river , the legislature is once again considering a bill that would limit the weight of boats to 5,000 pounds if they want to obtain a towed water-sports motorboat certificate . That permit is required for wakeboarding and waterskiing in the “ Newberg Pool Congested Zone ” of the river . As you know , Charbonneau has over one mile of shoreline on the river and excessive waves caused by large watercraft will continue to have an impact on erosion of the shoreline .
The board has taken no formal position on this bill but will be monitoring its progress through the legislature .

Aurora Airport update
The master planning process continues this month with the Public Advisory Group ’ s second meeting scheduled for March 1 . As reported last month , the mayor has asked the governor to intervene in the process based upon the governor ’ s stated Climate Change goals and the possible increase in leaded-fuel use with the airport ’ s proposed expansion . CCC will be working with the airport business group ( PAAM ) to further the discussion on improving the surrounding roads . The complication is that there are three different government agencies to deal with . The airport is in Marion County , the intersection of Arndt Road and Airport Road is in Clackamas County and the Oregon Department of Transportation controls Highway 551 on the west side of the airport .
We have asked the ODA for an inventory of aircrafts that are based at Aurora . We hope to have that soon . Also , the proponents of the runway extension have often claimed that it is a safety issue . In that regard , I have asked the ODA to provide the data that supports that assertion . In light of two recent airplane accidents , one in Medford and one in El Cajon , where the airplanes crashed within a mile of the airport , the safety issue is also very high on our list of concerns during this planning process .
We hope to have the website updated regarding these issues . It is part of the learning curve that we are going through in having a more hands-on approach to the website . Your patience with this process is appreciated .
CCC joins the community in mourning the loss of St . Paul firefighter Austin Smith
Last month , volunteer firefighter Austin Smith from St . Paul was fatally injured battling a barn fire on Champoeg Creek Lane near St . Paul . CCC President Gary Newbore sent a letter to the Fire District expressing our condolences to the family and the community of St . Paul . Hundreds have donated to the memorial fund set up by the district for the Smith family . In addition , a GoFundMe account has also been established . If you are so inclined , we will be taking donations at the CCC office through the first two weeks of March and will send those directly to the Fire District .
