Hello Wilsonville Library fans !
You know what they say about March ... in like a lion , etc . Since I ’ m writing this in your sortof-distant past , I
MARTIN have no idea what March is doing at the moment , but regardless of the weather , I do hope it will be a happy and healthy month for all of you .
Here at the big library , we have adapted well to COVID-19 ’ s many restrictions . Almost everyone who comes in wears their mask correctly ( e . g . without a hanging nose ), and most others are open to a gentle reminder . Those of us who interact with the public all day long are happy that so many of you care enough to protect us — Thank you ( and we all hope it will be over soon )!
Onward ! Our newest addition ( to celebrate the coming of spring !) is HOOP- LA . Hoopla is a service that is free to all of you with your Wilsonville-issued library card . It comprises tens of thousands of e-books , e-audiobooks , graphic novels , music , and television programs available to download . As a special bonus , for those of you who enjoy our library ’ s collection of Great Courses ( university-level courses on all kinds of subjects ), the full collection is available on Hoopla ! You can download the Hoopla app on your phone , tablet , computer , and / or smartTV , and check out up to ten titles a month . Give it a try and let us know how much you like it !
In other news , our wonderful Wilsonville Friends of the Library group is turning 40 this month . Unlike many of your other 40-year-old friends , there ’ s no talk of weight gain , crow ’ s feet , or just general malaise . Our Friends just keep on cheerily running the bookstore and helping underwrite our library programs and activities . Three ( or mayhaps
43 ) cheers for the committed volunteers that run the Friends of the Library . Perhaps the next time you ’ re in , you ’ ll take a detour to our bookstore , and ask how you can join too !
And here ’ s another anniversary ! Our Dolly Parton Imagination Library has been sending books to Wilsonville-area children for 10 years now ! Launched by Dolly Parton , who saw how childhood poverty could hurt the young , she created an eponymous foundation to send a book to an under-five child each month . Together with our kind local partners , see ( https :// wilsonvilleimaginationlibrary . weebly . com / donors . html ) the DPIL has enriched the lives of hundreds of area families over the past decade . Do you know a child under five years of age who lives in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District ? Why not ask them to sign up at no cost . Check out https :// wilsonvilleimaginationlibrary . weebly . com / for more details , or simply come and visit your favorite library , and ask !
In other exciting news , our very own Outreach Librarian Deborah Gitlitz just finished her turn on the prestigious Caldecott Medal Award Committee . Perhaps you remember the golden seal on the covers of some of the classic children ’ s books you ’ ve seen and enjoyed over many decades ( since 1938 , to be exact !) To be one of the few participants in this selective group is a very high honor , and comes with many rules attached . Although Deborah shared many excellent children ’ s titles with us throughout her service period , she was ( and remains ) under strict instructions that none of the committee ’ s deliberations ever be revealed , under whispered and feared penalties . Masons , eat your heart out ! So , all of us were just as much in the dark as you when this year ’ s winner was revealed — “ Watercress ,” by Andrea Wang , a book that is now an instant classic and will remain so ... forever ! Come and check it out ( along with the runners-up ) today !
Well , that ’ s about all the news that ’ s fit to print this month ! Who knows , perhaps there will be in-person programming by the time you read this . What more can I say . Oh , I know ... Check the WEBSITE !
The very best to all of you from all of us here at the big , barn-like library . Come and visit us soon and we ’ ll all dance a merry jig !
