• By starting on the King's square and going to the board edges, we
easily find the letter and number corresponding to that square. In
algebraic notation, the square's coordinates are always given with the
file's letter first, followed by the rank's number. So the White King's
square in the above position is f4.
In algebraic notation, the names of the pieces
are abbreviated as a single letter:
K = King
Q = Queen
B = Bishop
N = Knight (the K is already used by His Majesty!)
R = Rook
