• Chess moves are written with the abbreviation of the moving piece first,
followed by the square to which the piece moves. The Knight's move is
shown by the yellow arrow in this diagram:
and would be written as “Nd4” in algebraic notation.
• But what about the pawns? We haven't forgotten them. Although a
pawn move is sometimes written with the abbreviation “P”, it's common
for no abbreviation to be used at all. So when you see a move which is
given without a piece abbreviation, it's a pawn move.
White's move in the position above would be written simply as “e4”.
