building endurance and agility through extensive trail running and hiking on Southern Vermont’ s trail systems, some of which are directly connected to the AT and LT. Jospe explains,“ Nordic skiers train between 400 and 1,000 hours each year, much of it spent in low-intensity distance training, especially in the summer months. Our local trail networks are critical because they provide beautiful, engaging environments where athletes develop essential agility and endurance.”
Jospe specifically highlights several favored trail routes used by the SMS Nordic team.“ We frequently train on the AT near Stratton, often combining it with Stratton Mountain’ s gondola service. A popular route is running from Kelly Stand Road to Stratton Pond, continuing up to the summit of Stratton Mountain, then taking the gondola down. It provides varied terrain ideal for our training needs.” Another cherished trail is the Griffith Lake loop near Peru, beginning at Mad Tom Notch and incorporating sections of the AT, offering challenging yet rewarding terrain for seasoned athletes.
Trail training serves dual purposes, fostering athletic development and connecting students to their local environment.“ The trails provide the necessary physical conditioning for competitive Nordic skiing— long distances at manageable intensities— but they also instill appreciation for Vermont’ s natural beauty and environmental stewardship,” Jospe says.
This connection extends beyond physical conditioning into community engagement. Jospe points out SMS’ s commitment to giving back:“ Each spring, SMS hosts a Give Back Day, where students actively participate in trail maintenance, including carrying lumber up the AT to assist with shelter repairs near Bromley Mountain.
