Manchester store in multiple colors , and sustainably-minded aesthetes will delight in the “ Funny Bags .” Made with recycled polyester and upcycled leftover material from the manufacturing process , their hand-hewn texture pairs nicely with both contemporary streetwear and floral , boho-chic clothing . “ Marimekko is a company that is committed to sustainability ,” says Chase . “ We repurpose fabric scraps for many of the products in our new ‘ Marimade ’ product line , and we recycle dyes whenever possible . We also use fabrics such as cupro , an environmentally-sustainable silk alternative , in our new ready-to-wear clothing . The cupro fabric gets a lot of attention in the store . It feels amazing , and customers love to be able to experience our clothing in person . We

As time progressed , Marimekko expanded its factory and moved to its new location in the Herttoniemi neighborhood of Helsinki in 1973 . In the advent of Armi Ratia ’ s passing in 1979 , the operation continued to work with new designers and expand . Over the next several decades dozens of stores opened throughout the globe , including over a dozen in Japan and multiple stores in the U . S .
Several years after Sami Ruotsalainen ’ s “ Oiva ” tableware and Anu Penttinen ’ s
“ Sukat Makkaralla ” glassware were introduced in 2009 and 2010 , respectively , the Manchester store opened its doors in 2013 . As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , the Manchester outlet was the only operational Marimekko store in North America from December 2021 to November 2022 , when the additional Soho flagship store on Wooster Street in Manhattan opened to the public . It houses a charming assortment of beautiful pieces in an atelier-style atmosphere , which nicely contrasts the broad range of brilliantlycurated clothing and products at the Manchester store . “ The two stores are very different ,” says Chase . “ They each offer a distinct atmosphere and experience , and I wholeheartedly recommend visiting them both !”
