“ Marimekko translates from Finnish into English as ‘ Mari ’ s Dress ,’” notes Chase . “ It was meant to convey a sense of approachability . Marimekko has always been truly ahead of its time in terms of its design , its philosophy , and its emphasis on creating adaptable , versatile , unisex clothing that could be freely worn and lived in .”
The stellar Marimekko print designer , Maija Isola , was responsible for creating the “ Kivet ” circular stone print pattern and the trademark “ Unikko ” flower print pattern . Both eventually became beloved mainstays of Marimekko ’ s print collection . Those two patterns can be seen on a variety of different products sold at the Manchester store , including towels , bedding , stationery , and many other accessories and clothing items .
Annika Rimala followed up on Isola ’ s successful designs with the “ Tasaraita ” striped t-shirts in 1968 , which have also become enduring staples of Marimekko ’ s product range . “ There are over 3,500 prints in Marimekko ’ s collection ,” says Chase . “ Customers who are interested in learning more about the prints can access a free database on our website called ‘ Maripedia .’ They can also crossreference the prints with current product offerings to bring more depth to their experience .”
In 1971 , Armi Ratia ’ s son , Ristomatti Ratia , designed a series of “ Olkalaukku ” cotton canvas shoulder bags , followed by his equally wellreceived “ Matkuri ” traveler totes . Stylish tote bags and leather purses modeled after Ristomatti Ratia ’ s original creations are available at the
