Today, Armory Park stands as a thriving recreational space, officially opening in October 2023. It now features Joni’ s playground, a basketball court, a small skatepark, green spaces, as well as signs and monuments of the history, serving as a gathering spot for residents and visitors alike. Yet, beneath its modern amenities lies a history rich with educational, military, and community significance— testament to Richmond’ s resilience and growth.
Recognizing the importance of this history, the city unveiled interpretive signs on June 10, 2025,
during a ceremony hosted by the Richmond Historical Properties division and the Parks and Recreation Department. These markers tell the layered story of the site— from its early days as an educational institution to its military service and community role— connecting residents with their shared heritage.
Mayor Robert Blythe expressed pride in Armory Park.“ The residents of Richmond can be very proud of this park and the positive impact it has had on our community’ s quality of life,” he said.“ Understanding what this land has meant to our city helps us appreciate the present and look forward to the future.”
