Richmond’ s story. Located at 321 North 2nd Street, Armory Park’ s history spans more than two centuries. It began as Madison Academy in 1816, serving as an educational center for the community. For nearly six decades, it nurtured generations of students until its closure in 1874. Later, the site became Caldwell High School in 1895, playing an important role in local education until a devastating fire in 1921 led to its closure. to rebuild Madison High School, exemplifying the community’ s resilience and resourcefulness.
By the 1930s, the site’ s purpose shifted toward military and civic uses. The city’ s school district sold the property in 1930, and during the early 1940s, a Works Progress Administration( WPA) project constructed the Caldwell Armory. This new facility was more than just a military installation; it served as an Army headquarters in the 1950s and 1960s, symbolizing its strategic importance

during the Cold War era. In 1978, the Commonwealth of Kentucky transferred ownership of the armory to the city of Richmond for a nominal fee of one dollar, underscoring its significance to the community.
