What are the Pinnacles ?
The Pinnacles are remarkable rock formations that mark the edge of the Knobs region , a horseshoeshaped area surrounding the Bluegrass . These natural wonders , composed of erosion-resistant sandstone , offer elevated vantage points overlooking the rolling hills of

the surrounding landscape . The trails themselves are part of the Berea College Forest , a carefully managed forest owned and operated by Berea College , contributing to a legacy of conservation .
Why Hike the Pinnacles ?
From the East and West Pinnacles and the Indian Fort Lookout , hikers can enjoy unparalleled views of the Bluegrass region to the north and the Knobs to the south and east . The trails are conveniently accessible from Lexington and Richmond , making them a fantastic option for a day trip . The Pinnacles trails offer stunning views from the lookouts at West Pinnacle , Indian Fort , Buzzard ’ s Roost , Eagle ’ s Nest , and East Pinnacle , and they ’ re beautiful in every season .
Getting There and Trail Information :
The main trailhead for

the Pinnacles is located at 2047 Big Hill Rd ., Berea , KY 40403 . From Berea , take Big Hill Rd ./ Hwy 21 , the parking lot and the Forestry Outreach Center are on the left , approximately 3 miles from Boone Tavern . If you reach the Dollar General and Big Hill gas station at the intersection of Hwy 21 and 421 , you ’ ve gone too far .
For a shorter route to West Pinnacle , consider using the “ Berea Forest Trail ” ( also known as the West Barton Trailhead ). A smaller parking lot is available for access to this trail , which is approximately 2 miles from East Pinnacle .

The main parking lot at the Pinnacles has two free electric vehicle charging stations . Berea College has also recently refurbished the parking lot and added the Berea College Forestry Outreach Center near Indian

Fort , providing valuable resources for visitors .
Trail Recommendations :
Starting from the main trailhead , all trails begin with an uphill climb before branching off , leading to a variety of rewarding destinations :
Indian Fort Lookout : Intermediate , 1.02 miles one way , with an elevation gain of approximately 950 ft to 1,579 ft .
West Pinnacle : Intermediate , 1.52 miles one way , with an elevation gain of approximately 950 ft to 1,461 ft .
East Pinnacle : ( Recommended for firsttimers ) Intermediate , 1.8 miles one way , with an elevation gain of approximately 950 ft to 1,537 ft .
Eagle ’ s Nest : Intermediate , 1.6 miles one way .
