Eurovision is the longest-running annual international TV song competition. The Eurovision Song Contest started in the 1950s by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in an attempt to return to normalcy after the destruction of World War II. The hope was that this would be a positive way to foster national pride and friendly competition.

Nevertheless, according to Dr Karen Fricker, co-director of the Eurovision Research Network, the contest was set up for the practical purpose of testing the reach of new broadcast technology in the 1950s.
