Les espèces du Jardin de Pamplemousses
recèlent d’histoire. Certaines portent un nom
aussi farfelu qu’imagé : le palmier rouge à
lèvres, le palmier crocodile, l’arbre à saucisses,
l’arbre qui saigne… Le Talipot, un palmier
géant, a quant à lui la particularité de fleurir
tous les 60 ans avant de mourir. Un superbe
spécimen trône fièrement dans le jardin
du Château de la Villebague. La fleur de
Trochetia, très rare, a été élue emblème de
l’île Maurice en 1992. On en trouve quelques
beaux plants au Château de Mon Plaisir. À
St Aubin, un Fromager (arbre à coton) fait
face à la rhumerie. Exceptionnel à Maurice,
il aurait été planté par les propriétaires de
l’époque qui en auraient trouvé une graine
au Jardin de Pamplemousses ! Cet arbre,
recouvert de piquants, porte un fruit qui,
en s’ouvrant, donne le kapok, qui servait
autrefois à remplir les oreillers. 8
Rare species
There is so much history behind the plants
in the Pamplemousses Garden. Many of
the names are full of imagery and at times
downright bizarre: the lipstick palm, the
taraw palm, the sausage tree and the dragon
blood tree. As for the giant talipot palm,
while it can live for 60 years, it has the
peculiarity to fruit and flower only once
– after which it dies. A superb specimen
towers over the gardens of the Château de
la Villebague nearby. The very rare trochetia
boutoniana was chosen as Mauritius’ national
flower in 1992 and a few fine examples can
be found near the Chateau de Mon Plaisir.
A kapok can be seen opposite to the rum
distillery in St Aubin. A rarity in Mauritius,
it was planted by the then owners, who had
found a seed in the Pamplemousses Garden.
The tree is covered in thorns and bears fruit
that, on opening, produce a cotton-like fibre,
which in bygone days was used as a filling
for pillows.
