Plateforme européenne
Département d’Outre-Mer, La Réunion assure une forte présence
française et européenne dans la zone indo-océanique. L’aéroport
Roland Garros accompagne son essor économique et touristique
depuis plusieurs décennies. Le développement de la plateforme fait
l’objet d’une concertation permanente avec l’État et les collectivités
locales, qui sont aussi actionnaires de la Société Aéroportuaire.
D’importants investissements ont été réalisés depuis 2011, notamment
pour adapter les pistes aux avions de nouvelle génération et réorganiser
les flux des passagers dans l’aérogare. Ces investissements se poursuivent,
dans le cadre du plan stratégique Welcome 2017-2022. Un programme
de 180 millions d’euros, dont 80 consacrés aux travaux d’extension de
l’aérogare passagers, est prévu sur la période.
Vitrine de La Réunion
En 2022, l’aéroport sera en capacité d’accueillir 3,2 millions de
passagers par an, contre 2,4 millions aujourd’hui. Ses installations se
conformeront aux nouvelles normes européennes en matière de tri et
de contrôle des bagages, qui s’appliqueront à compter de septembre
2022. Le projet prévoit la construction d’un nouveau bâtiment, sur
environ 20 500 m 2 et trois niveaux, ainsi que l’agrandissement de
l’aérogare actuelle. En parallèle, l’aéroport se dotera de nouveaux
espaces de stationnement et les accès à la plateforme seront
entièrement réaménagés.
Dans le cadre de cette opération, l’aéroport Roland Garros a également
souhaité se doter d’une nouvelle vitrine affirmant et magnifiant l’identité
de l’île. Comme le souligne Marc Le Cam, architecte de l’AIA Life
Designers (groupe français et international dont le projet a été retenu) :
« Nous avons conçu un aéroport vivant, qui évoque La Réunion et ne
ressemble à aucun autre, intégré dans son environnement et ouvert sur
le superbe paysage des montagnes intérieures ».
L’ambition bioclimatique
La future aérogare sera conçue de manière bioclimatique, pour
réduire les dépenses de climatisation tout en offrant une ambiance
agréable et un excellent niveau de confort grâce à la ventilation
naturelle. Il s’agira d’une première mondiale pour un bâtiment
aéroportuaire de cette dimension en milieu tropical. Les deux parties
de la toiture du nouveau bâtiment seront séparées par un canyon
végétalisé permettant l’extraction de l’air intérieur. Une esplanade
végétalisée sera créée devant l’aérogare dont les deux bâtiments
seront reliés par des galeries pour faciliter de circulation de l’air.
L’aéroport de La Réunion Roland Garros se distingue depuis
plusieurs années par son fort engagement environnemental. Depuis
2014, il est notamment certifié ISO 14001 et ISO 50001 pour son
management de l’environnement et de l’énergie.
A European platform
A French overseas department, Reunion Island is at the heart of
a strong French and European presence in the Indian Ocean
region. Roland Garros Airport has been supporting the island’s
economic and tourist development for several decades. This is why
the platform’s expansion is the subject of a permanent dialogue
between central government and the local authorities, which are
also shareholders in the airport’s management company, the Société
Aéroportuaire Roland-Garros.
Considerable sums have been invested since 2011, notably in
adapting the runways to accommodate new generations of
aircrafts and in improving passenger flow in the terminal building.
Investment continues in line with the strategic plan, Welcome
2017-2022. A budget of €180 million has been allocated to the

five-year programme, including €80 million for the extension to the
passenger terminal.
Reunion Island showcases a new identity
By 2022, the airport will be able to handle 3.2 million passengers
a year as opposed to 2.4 million at present. From September
2022, baggage screening and control systems will conform to
new European standards. Plans include provision for a new
20,500-square-metre building on three floors, as well as for
extensions to the current terminal. The airport will also have
increased parking space and access to the terminal buildings will
be completely reconfigured.
As part of the project, Roland Garros Airport has also sought to
give itself a fresh appearance which reflects and raises awareness
of the island´s specificity. As architect Marc Le Cam of AIA Life
Designers (the French-based international group which won the
contract for the airport) emphasises, “Our concept is for a vibrant
airport which represents Reunion Island and is unlike any other,
integrated within its environment and open to superb views of the
mountains of the interior”.
Bioclimatic intentions
The future terminal has been designed to be bioclimatic in order
to reduce the costs of air-conditioning and simultaneously create a
pleasant and very comfortable feeling thanks to natural ventilation.
It will be a world-first for a building of its size in a tropical location.
The two sections of the new building´s roof will be separated by
a green space for the extraction of indoor air. A verdant entrance
precinct will be created in front of the airport, whose two buildings
will be linked by green walkways to allow air to circulate.
For several years, Reunion´s Roland Garros Airport has stood out
for its strong commitment to environmentally-friendly measures.
Since 2014, it has been ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certified for its
management both of its environment and its energy usage.
