Les tropiques… Des embruns salés, l’ombre bienvenue d’un cocotier
pour échapper à un soleil parfois taquin et cette insatiable envie de
délassement : c’est dans ce cadre que la soif s’invite volontiers. Dans
ces conditions, quoi de plus exaltant que cette première gorgée bien
glacée ? Avec son bouquet parfumé et sa couronne de mousse, la
bière est à n’en pas douter ce qu’il existe de plus typique par ici.
Pourtant grande productrice de rhum, la région s’est laissée séduire
par les arômes voluptueux de la bière, son côté désaltérant et sa
légèreté.
Si les brasseries sont chose commune à travers le monde, ce n’est que
vers la moitié du 20 éme siècle que l’idée de s’approprier cette boisson
et ses codes propres devient un besoin dans notre coin du monde. Le
désir de consommer une bière bien locale ne faisait alors pourtant
pas mouche dans les mœurs des habitants. Mais la belle robe dorée
de la blonde ne tardera pas à en séduire plus d’un, faisant naître de
facto un sentiment national d’identification à la bière locale.
L’océan Indien peut aujourd’hui se targuer d’un véritable savoir-
faire. Preuve si l’en est, la plupart de ces « bières nationales » ont
raflé des médailles à travers le monde, ouvrant la voie pour certaines
à l’exportation aux quatre coins du monde.
Escale sur quatre îles qui n’ont rien à envier à la Belgique…
Picture this: a tropical background, sea spray, the shade of
a coconut tree offering shelter from the teasing sun and the
irresistible urge to lay back… Hot enough to get thirsty! In such
conditions, the first gulp from an ice-cold pint tastes like heaven.
With its pleasant aromas and gorgeous foam crown, beer has
undoubtedly become a standard around here. Essentially known
for rum production, the region has nevertheless succumbed to
the voluptuous flavours, the thirst-slaking character and the
lightness of beer.
While breweries are a common thing abroad, in this part of the
world interest in the beverage and its specific codes only surfaced
in the middle of the 20 th century. In the first years, the thirst
for locally-made beer did not find its way into the local habits.
But soon enough, the golden bubbles of the blond brew left
many spellbound, eventually leading to a nationwide sense of
identification to local beer.
The Indian Ocean countries now boast a real know-how. As
evidence, most of their national beers have been international
acclaimed, opening the way to worldwide exportation.
Let us now take a tour of four islands that have nothing to envy
of Belgium…
