« C ’ était un dimanche . Ce matin-là , j ’ étais dans les jardins du Soneva Gili , sur l ’ île privée de Lankanfushi . Soudain , un grondement terrible , comme un avion au-dessus de ma tête . Puis la vague est arrivée , une muraille d ’ eau noire qui a tout emporté . Instinctivement , je me suis mis à courir vers mon bungalow . Ma femme s ’ était réfugiée sur une fenêtre avec notre bébé de 18 mois . C ’ est ce qui les sauvera . Un tsunami [ celui du 26 décembre 2004 , ndlr ] vient de frapper , faisant 110 victimes … Cet épisode dramatique a changé ma vie . De jardinier d ’ hôtel , je suis passé à designer paysagiste d ’ atoll . Il fallait tout reconstruire , tout régénérer . Pas seulement le resort qui m ’ employait , mais tout l ’ écosystème de l ’ île . »

Then the wave came – a wall of black water that swept everything away . Instinctively , I started running towards my bungalow . My wife had taken refuge on a window with our 18-month-old baby . That ' s what saved them . A tsunami [ that of December 26 th 2004 ] had just struck , killing 110 people ... It was an event that changed my life . I went from being a hotel gardener to an atoll landscape designer . Everything had to be rebuilt and regenerated . Not just the resort where I was employed , but the island ’ s entire ecosystem .”
