subversion, justice, action, love,
and humility. This is her battle cry
against a world that time and
again breaks with violence and
greed. Her’s is a cry for
wholeness, a recognition that
God’s hope is tangible and sure,
and a rallying call to do what is
just and not what is easy.
Advent and preparations for
Christmas are more than hanging
stockings with care and draping
Christmas lights. When we talk
about “preparing the way,” we are
not talking about decorating our
homes; instead, we’re talking
about serving our neighbor.
Do you know what the miracle of
Christmas is? It’s that God
emptied Godself to become
human. On Christmas morning,
our ever-creating God becomes
created matter, becomes a finite,
broken, fragile, material, and
mortal human being. So then, if
we are to “prepare the way of the
Lord,” we ought to tend to the
plight of created beings
everywhere. To prepare for God’s
personhood, we should be tending
to the persons around us, to better
the human condition.
God did not just become one
human being in one place and
time—God also became human
