You ( th ) Can Do It : Books Beyond Borders
LUMEN
Overseas community : Reading and Education
An initiative by students of LE401
As Josephians , we are taught to be men and women for others and to serve the last , the lost , and the least . As global citizens , we are urged to care for the community within SJI , Singapore , and beyond .
Embarking on this Values-In-Action ( VIA ) project , in collaboration with Books Beyond Borders , we aimed to support children in Nepal through the collection of old books , which would be sold at lower prices by the organisation to raise funds to support the impoverished in Nepal .
A team , comprising eight students from LE401 and two teacher advisors , came together to organise this initiative . As a team , we set out to raise awareness of our project through creating posters , publicity videos and email campaigns . As part of the collection process , we set up a book collection station every morning , as well as during recess , in order to facilitate the convenient donation of goods .
Although we faced some challenges that seemed insurmountable , we pushed through and overcame whatever was thrown at us . We truly could not have done it without the full support of our teachers and the SJI community .
