One of the challenges on the trip was a long and arduous hike . Totalling over 13 hours over three days , the journey through streams and mud tested our young Josephians ’ perseverance and cooperation . With the aim of exploring Vietnam ’ s multifaceted ways of life , students hiked up the mountains of Sapa , where they stayed in traditional Vietnamese homes around 1,500m above sea level .
The hike was a valuable opportunity for the group to learn life lessons beyond the classroom . It also pushed them to learn more about themselves and each other . The homestay served as a valuable reminder not to take things for granted and forced Josephians to step out of their comfort zones .
From Sapa , the students headed to Hanoi via sleeper train . The sleeper train was a great adventure for many , as amidst the confined spaces and limited amenities , the experience demanded resilience in unfamiliar conditions . They also went on a cultural expedition around Hanoi with a local guide , learning more about Hanoi ’ s history . The students visited Tran Quoc Pagoda , Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex , Hoa Lo Prison and Train street . The students learnt more about the culture in Hanoi , broadening their perspectives on the lives of the community .
The unstructured time without direct supervision allowed students to explore Hanoi in groups , building up their practical skills and confidence . Navigating the city streets independently , negotiating transactions , and
making other significant decisions became a testament to the students ’ developing selfsufficiency . For many students , this time was a practical lesson in self-reliance , urging them to overcome challenges and tend to their needs independently .
This expedition encapsulated the ‘ world is our classroom ’ sentiment . The trip served as a foundation upon which to cultivate the values , skills , and sense of community essential for shaping future leaders at SJI .
