Forge the Way Home-Based Learning

By Mr Lee Han Seng , Mrs Mishaelle Chua , Mrs Nevina Ho and Mr Kelvin Seet

In keeping with our Lasallian culture of curae ( which means care in Latin ), our teachers across the three academies in SJI spearheaded several maiden initiatives in their endeavour to offer an interactive , meaningful and engaging buffet of online lessons during HBL . At the same time , it was evident that the spirit of curae was overflowing from the cup as teachers stay connected to support one another to learn new skills , strategies and online tools . From sharing breakfast photos before virtual daily attendancetaking begins to celebrating one another ' s birthday online , they pulled out all stops to engage and stay connected with their students . Our educators share their HBL experiences in this story .

C- Creativity and Innovation The English Language Department had many activities planned for the Book Week this year . When the COVID-19 situation did not improve , they knew they had to switch plans quickly and took this opportunity to offer a virtual Book Week for the students , albeit an online and scaled-down version . The ingenuity of Einstein came alive in some of the Science teachers , who converted their homes into a science studio , using whatever home tools they could find to conduct remote teaching to engage students .
U- Uplifting others As part of the ‘ Small Kindness , Big Impact ’ initiative , COVID-19 provided an opportunity for our students to show care for their family members through little acts of kindness and learning to become young men for others . From simple tasks such as making a cup of coffee for their parents to helping out with household chores , our young Josephians shared how they begin to put the needs of others before their own during their Form Tutor Time . Towards the end of the CB , students also wrote words of appreciation to their teachers through a padlet wall for the extra effort their teachers had put in during this challenging time . Indeed , they have learnt that how their words and actions can uplift others and make their home and school a better place for all .
R- Responsive In the midst of coping with the ‘ new normal ’, the teachers remained responsive to the needs of the students and their fellow teachers . A group of Year 2 students led by PE teacher Ms Asmah sprung into action and created a video on doing simple stretches at home to raise the awareness and importance of self-care .
