The makeover comes as the school , which moved to Malcolm Road from Bras Basah in 1988 , looks to adapt to changing educational needs , and to accommodate more students taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme ( IBDP ) that started in 2013 . The campus upgrading is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2017 , enabling SJI to increase its student population to 2,000 .
The S $ 40-million redevelopment project includes adding four new buildings to increase SJI ’ s capacity by about 14,000 square metres , and refurbishing the existing buildings , which are more than 25 years old . The new indoor sports hall will house basketball , tennis and badminton courts . There will be a 600-seat lecture theatre block with meeting rooms . Two other blocks with a total of 32 classrooms will be built above the existing buildings and connected by a link bridge . Other key modifications include the improvement of track and field facilities , such as the integration of a full rugby-cum-football field , half a hockey field , and a 100m track .
Indeed , when SJI moves back to its Malcolm Road campus in 2017 , Josephians can expect a more conducive environment for the holistic education that the school provides .
