Launch of the SJI Foundation
The SJI Foundation was launched on Saturday , 23 April 2011 at the Glass Hall , SJI International . The event was graced by guest of honour , Mr George Yeo .
Mr Yeo also officially opened the De La Salle Brothers ’ Building at SJII which houses art studios , science laboratories and classrooms .
The SJI Foundation Board of Trustees is headed by Mr Philip Yeo ( SJI graduating Class of 1965 ) and Vice- Chairman Mr Edmund Tie ( SJI graduating Class of 1965 ). Its operations are overseen by a Management Committee led by Mr Derek Loh ( SJI graduating Class of 1982 ), Executive Director of TSMP Law Corporation .
Alumnus is the new CEO of Tan Tock Seng Hospital
Prof Philip Choo ( SJI graduating Class of 1974 ) is also a member on the Medical Advisory Boards for Ang Mo Kio Hospital and Bright Vision Hospital . He also sits on the Board of Directors , Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre , Management Board of NHG 1-Health , NHG , and the Medicine Advisory Committee of the Health Sciences Authority .
Honours at the 2011 Biomedical Olympiad
SJI walked away with a stunning collection of prizes : three sets of Gold , Silver and Bronze and the team Trophy for Non-IP Schools at the 2011 Singapore Biomedical Challenge organized by Anglo-Chinese Junior College and Yong Loo Lin School on Saturday , 19 February at ACJC .
Singing for Survivors of the Japanese disaster
SJI hosted a combined school choir mini concert at The Beurel ( SJI library ) on Saturday , 26 March 2011 to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan .
The combined choir comprised choral groups from the SJI Vocal Ensemble , Dunman Secondary School Choir , Catholic Junior College Choir , Raffles Chorale , Raffles Voices , and the Raffles Voices Alumni . The concert was aptly titled Ubi caritas et amor , Deus ibi est – Where charity and love are , God is there .
The concert raised $ 11,268.15 while the Class of 333 accumulated $ 5,261.50 from the sale of drinks that day and school collections for the one week prior to the concert . The total sum of $ 17,771.85 was then channeled to the Japanese disaster victims .
The Fullerton-SJI Leadership Lecture ( 2011 )
The first two lectures this year saw Mr Gerard Ee ( SJI graduating Class of 1965 and Chairman , NKF ) and Mr Peter Seah ( SJI graduating Class of 1964 and Chairman , DBS Bank ) sharing their life lessons and management styles with an attentive audience of students and professionals at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore .
Excerpts of Mr Ee ' s lecture is available on page 18 . On 13 May 2011 , Mr Seah shared about resilience and learning from failures as well as his personal style of management with heart instead of an iron fist .
Jointly organised by The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and SJI , the Lectures feature SJI alumni who have played significant roles in Singapore ’ s development . The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is the venue sponsor and The Straits Times is the media partner .
In conjunction with the series , The Fullerton Hotel Singapore has generously donated a sum of S $ 500,000 from which S $ 250,000 each will be donated to the SJI Scholarships Fund and The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund respectively .
Launch of the Lasallian East Asia District ( LEAD )
LEAD was officially inaugurated at a ceremony in SJI on Sunday 15 May 2011 with Bro Thomas Johnson , Vicar General , as guest of honour . The first Visitor , Bro Edmundo Fernandez , and Auxiliary Visitor , Bro Thomas Lavin , received their letters of appointment during the ceremony .
The new District comprises seven countries : Hong Kong , Japan , Malaysia , Myanmar , Philippines , Singapore , Thailand . The Provincial offices will be based in La Salle College , Kowloon , Hong Kong .
