First Grade
Wow ! May has arrived ! We have loved spending this year with your child and are excited to finish this year strong with them . We have been reading through the gospel of Matthew and are learning so much from the person and work of Jesus . At the end of first grade , your children will have read through three whole books of the Bible ! In phonics , we will continue learning about different vowel teams , building our reading fluency and comprehension , and be writing more and more every day ! In reading , we are learning about the American Frontier , explorers , and the westward expansion of the United States . In math , we will work on solving story problems and math facts to 20 . We will also start a science unit on sound and light . We look forward to learning more about this world and its wonderful Creator in the month of May !
Second Grade
It ’ s hard to believe we are entering our last month together . We want to thank you for entrusting your children with us this year ! As we wrap up the year , we will start and finish our study of the gospel of Mark . In math , we will be focusing on larger numbers and reviewing place value to the thousands place . We will also continue to practice strategies for adding and subtracting 3 and 4-digit numbers and solving story problems . In reading and writing we are going to be working on dra�ing , editing and writing informational text about historical events . �is works nicely with our reading units as we continue to explore expository nonfiction texts and articles . In our final Knowledge unit , we will finish the year by learning about ordinary people who stood up for a cause , such as MLK Jr . and Susan B . Anthony . We are becoming strong writers and are striving to use the skills in word study and vocabulary when we write .
�ird Grade
It has been a joy and privilege to walk alongside your students this year . We are so proud of all they have accomplished since August ! In our final month of third grade , we will continue our study of the book of Acts and the life of the early Christians . In math , students will learn to describe and classify two-dimensional shapes , especially quadrilaterals . �ey will calculate area and perimeter as well as represent fractions as parts of a whole shape . When we wrap up geometry , we will turn our attention back to more advanced multiplication and strategies for multiplying single-digit by two-digit numbers . We are enjoying our unit of Colonial America in which we are learning about how each colony started and what life was like when people first arrived and settled in the New World . In grammar , students are practicing comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs using the suffixes – er and – est as well as more and most . We are also learning the meaning of other common prefixes and suffixes . Finally , we are looking forward to incubating and hatching chick eggs as we learn about the life cycle of a chicken in our study of ecology ! From the young third grade child who entered the classroom in August to the now almost fourth grader , there has been much growth through learning to work hard , learning to be responsible , and keep on persevering when challenges arise ! We want to thank you for partnering with us this year . Please join us as we commit to finishing strong this school year !
