daily rewards of their careers as health care professionals, they never forget the first moment they slide on that white coat. Our physicians understand that an essential responsibility of today is preparing the physicians of tomorrow. For years, GLMS members have been a part of the annual White Coat Ceremony where they assist University of Louisville faculty in welcoming new 1st year medical students to the U of L School of Medicine. This year’s ceremony saw 162 new students join the university as the graduating class of 2019. GLMS President Dr. Robert Couch congratulated the students during the ceremony and gave them words of wisdom for the years ahead. “This day, your first day as a medical student, is a landmark day in your life,” he said. “You and your family should feel proud of what you’ve accomplished to get to this point. You now need to focus your energies on becoming the best physician you can be.” The Wear the White Coat event was sponsored in part by the GLMS Foundation, the charitable arm of GLMS. Once students have entered medical school, GLMS checks in with them periodically to help guide and assist in their development. One of the earliest and most fun nights we host for them is Specialty Speed Networking at the Old Medical School. This year, 11 physicians from various specialties sat down with first- and second-year medical students to discuss all aspects of their careers. Students have frequently praised the event, saying it helps form their specialty interests. Physicians involved say they enjoy it as well, as it reminds them of the people who mentored them towards the selection of their specialty. Thank you to all the physicians who took time to speak to these medical students about their careers.
