“This is a very significant event in the lives of medical students because the
cost of attending medical school is so great,” said David Watkins, MD, the
GLMS Foundation Golf Committee Chair.
More than 70 physicians and sponsors visited the Hurstbourne Country
Club golf course to play 18 holes while raising funds for medical students. New
this year was the Lelan K. Woodmansee Medical Scholarship named in honor
of the retired GLMS Executive Director. The recipient was Francesca Pribble
Kingery. Other scholarship winners this year were Elizabeth Bruenderman,
Anna C. W. Hayes, Elizabeth C. Veasey, Donald R. Herdt and Evan B. Rhea
who was awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the GLMS Alliance.
The Alliance is one of GLMS’s most important programs, supporting GLMS
physicians, their spouses and their families through social events, advocacy
and community service. 2015-16 Alliance President Karin Sonnier, wife
of George Sonnier, MD, and Alliance members were active throughout
the community. The group participated in the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Disease,” collaborated with the Foundation on the golf outing, toured The
Healing Place Women’s Campus and Supplies Over Seas, and supported the
Travis French Memorial Blood Drive. Thank you to the GLMS Alliance for
another great year of service.
Like the Alliance, GLMS is also maintaining important relationships
throughout the community, and collaborating with many of the same
organizations, including The Healing Place, Doctors & Lawyers for Kids
and Surgery on Sunday Louisville. Our partnership with Surgery on Sunday
recently grew as GLMS agreed to provide credentialing and communication
abilities for the organization, which makes sure patients with little or no health
care have access to free outpatient surgeries.
Erica Sutton, MD, director of Surgery on Sunday Louisville, “We are so
glad to partner with GLMS. Free outpatient surgery for the uninsured and
underinsured was a definite need in our community.”
Another major group that GLMS has built a strong partnership with is
the Kentucky Medical Association. The two advocacy groups have worked
together closer than ever in this legislative session and GLMS submitted
several resolutions at the KMA Annual Meeting held in September. The
resolutions passed this year were:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Amended Limitation on AMA Delegates (discussed on page 21)
80 Percent Colorectal Screenings by 2018
Assisting Primary Care Physicians Who Provide Mental Health Care
Improving Drug Treatment
Promotion of Free Healthful Lifestyles Events
Reinstating Medicaid “Prescriber Only” Participating Status
Vision Testing at Driver’s License Renewal
During the KMA Annual Meeting, several GLMS past-presidents were
elected to leadership roles within the KMA. G. Randolph Schrodt, MD,
was elected as Board Chair. Linda Gleis, MD, was elected as SecretaryTreasurer and was also chosen as the 2015 recipient of the KMA Distinguished
Service Award for outstanding service to patients, organized medicine and
the community at large. Also at the meeting, Russell Williams, MD, was
elected as an alternate KMA trustee for Louisville, District 5.
