Craft Taproom – there’s a vibrant, unexpected energy
about this place that doesn’t strike you from the unassuming
black-and-red banner. Inviting yourself in and grabbing some 4-
pint pitchers will not disappoint. It’s home to a massive selection
of fancy ciders and independent brewery wares that don’t feel
so hipster that you aren’t allowed to drink them (and don’t come
equipped with the usual price tag). Wednesday game nights
have now become a regular thing if you’re feeling like
unleashing your inner nerd in a boozey environment.
Kelly’s dispensary – the spooky exterior with its eclectic window
displays may leave you unsure whether a concept bar or a working
man’s hovel lies beneath, but Kelly’s dispensary is worth a trip inside.
Imagine a quieter, smaller Brookhouse where you can play pool and
still hear yourself talk without somebody slopping their £1 cider down
your bus tour t shirt. Their live music Thursdays may even become a
contender for where you spend that particular weekday night. The
interior is far more warming and filled with curious knick-knacks and
retro lighting that will make you want to stay just that little bit longer for
their plethora of quiz nights, sports showings and film days.
Willowbank Tavern – on any remotely sunny day, the benches in
front of the Willowbank visible from your 699 commute will be packed
to the rafters. It’s a curiously ornate building with the same sort of
nightclub-feel that the Brookhouse has upon entry. Undeniably, it’s a
friendly, working man’s hangout. Table service may occasional leave
something to be desired as one might expect at a busy pub.. Perfect
for a local authentic Sunday roast with more gravy than you can fit on a
plate.
Caffee Oro – look out for the massive coffee bean insignia and you
can’t miss Oro. This very hipster café bar also turns into a good joint for
a drink by night. It has a very refreshing, artsy interior that’s always
popular with folk just wanting to pass a few hours with their laptops open
and some sort of beverage at hand. The breakfast pancakes are also
unmissable.
Hopefully this brief little synopsis gives you some inspiration for where to test drive for a few hours on a free evening and where to head to
find some of the characterful scouse locals who never seem to leave these places. Happy bevs and RIP to your loan!
