What inspires your work?

"Animals.  Always animals.  As a child, I was a RAF Services kid so we moved around a lot.  I spent some time in North Africa where there was this amazing sand which, when mixed with water, you could use like clay.  I used to spend loads of time just modelling animals with it."

Do you have a favourite sculpture subject?

"Greyhounds.  They are a sculpture every time they move.  I used to work with a Greyhound rescue charity which rescues ex racing dogs.  We would go to Crufts every year and as well as helping them man their fundraising stall, I would display some of my sculptures.  An attraction for the stall and a good way to win commissions!"

From which artists do you take inspiration?

"Bugatti – his modelling of animals is just sublime.

Henri Gaudier-BrzeskaHe died so young; aged 23; in the first World War.  If he had lived longer, I can’t imagine what he would have produced.

Eric Gill.  I know he’s a carver but I love the lines he uses. Such clean lines.

More modern.  Nicola Hicks, Sophie Ryder……

Yes all to do with animals!"

And there we leave it, knowing that Carol’s animals will continue to grace our shows this year and for many years to come, always so popular with the public who never fail to see their own critters in the beautiful sculptures that Carol creates.
