Caroline Wheaton visits the

Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny

“It punches well above its weight in terms of the artists it shows and the concerts it holds”, I was told before I visited this cultural hub in the small alpine town of Martigny for the first time.

Never heard of it?  No…I don’t think many people have but it is true, the quality of the exhibits, the general contribution to the local cultural life, the amazing variety of art and memoriabilia which can be found here, would be worth a mention if the gallery was situated in a European capital.  The fact that these treasures are tucked away in a not particularly pretty town in the Swiss Alps, means that it is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Martigny was a Gallo-Roman town and it was whilst Leonard Gianadda was excavating a site to build a block of flats in 1973, that the remains of a Roman amphi-theatre were found.
