TRADITIONAL FIGURE SCULPTURE (10 WEEKS) (10 WEEKS) Focus on developing techniques for altering thrown forms on and off the wheel to create functional pottery. Strategies will be presented to encourage students to develop their aesthetic vocabulary. A range of techniques will be demonstrated, from dissecting forms to constructing with slabs. Group discussions of new techniques and contemporary works also aid in our discovery of form and function. Working weekly from a nude model, students will take a methodical approach to sculpting the figure. Students may choose to sculpt a head, torso or full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, body proportions, poses and gesture. Building techniques and observational skills will be emphasized. Special attention will be given to traditional and nontraditional finishing techniques for sculpture. Tuesday 7-10pm Sunday, 10am–1pm Kyle Hendrix Starts January 13 Robin Power Starts January 18 $360, Members $350 ADVANCED WHEELTHROWING (10 WEEKS) Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic. Monday 7-10pm David Trost Starts January 12 Sunday 11am-2pm DRAW ON CLAY ADVANCED TOPICS IN SODA FIRING: FORM AND SURFACE (10 WEEKS) This class will explore drawing and painting on the clay surface. Using slips and underglazes, stains and glazes, students will build the surface by brushing, incising, inlaying, and simple monoprinting. We will have a still life and portrait exercises to develop skill and images. Students can also bring their own images for inspiration. Handbuilders welcome.
