THE DYER’S STUDIO (10 WEEKS) TEXTILES Whether you are new to dyes or want to learn new approaches, this course is for all levels. Topics covered will be addition of color (MX and acid dyes), removal or replacement of color (thiox and discharges), and methods of structurally altering cloth such as devore. Focus will be given to fiber chemistry and the effects of processes on different fibers. Material fee includes all dyes. Students provide all fabrics. Monday 6:30-9:30pm John Paul Morabito Starts January 12 KAKISHIBU VARIATIONS WITH INDIGO GARMENT CONSTRUCTION II: WORKING WITH KNITS (5 WEEKS) (10 WEEKS) Kakishibu is a tannin juice from persimmon fruits that has been used as dye, paint, glue and waterproofing material in Japan for over 400 years. Use kakishibu and pre-reduced synthetic Indigo to apply resists, paint onto fabrics (cotton, linen, silk), and create deep browns and indigo blues. Change colors by mordant into various grays and black. Material fee includes all dyes and fabric on the first day. Students provide fabrics. Expand your cozy winter wardrobe with garments made by you. Our sergers and coverstitch machines make it easy to work with knits like jersey and sweatshirt fleece. Make friends with new fabrics, equipment and the instructor who guides the class in making a garment from beginning to end. Instruction covers other advanced topics and troubleshooting as it relates to projects. No materials needed on the first day. Prerequisite: First-Time Sewing or equivalent experience. Colors and designs will be developed by over-dyeing and mordant through exercises. Achieve rich painterly shades using traditional techniques for contemporary pieces. Instructor will present samples and touch on the history of technique. Material fee includes all dyes and fabric on first day. Students provide fabrics after the first class. Sunday 10am-1pm Akemi Nakano Cohn Session I: Starts January 18 $175, Members $170 $30 Material fee $340, Members $330 INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED QUILTING II: DESIGN AND TECHNIQUE EMBROIDERY PROJECTS (5 WEEKS) Now that you have finished your sampler it’s time to start on your very own embroidery project. Socialize with classmates as you build rich texture on your cloth and learn new stitches and techniques like beads and stumpwork. A perfect way to budget time in your week for embroidery. Prerequisite: First Time Embroidery or similar experience. Monday 10am-1pm Camille Canales Session I: Starts January 12 $175, Members $170 PATTERN DESIGN: PRINTED FABRICS (10 WEEKS) ZIPPERS & BUTTONS II: THE SHIFT DRESS (5 WEEKS) Our second-time sewing class is back with a twist! Sew your first garment, a knee-length shift dress in your favorite fabrics. Revisit the basics and challenge yourself with darts, zippers, sleeves and bias tape. Leave with a custom dress and the confidence to keep sewing. Self-taught sewers with knowledge of basics are welcome to join. Material fee includes thread and some notions. No materials needed on the first day. Prerequisite: First-Time Sewing or equivalent sewing experience. (10 WEEKS) Work with a talented quilting artist as you make your next quilt. Students can either begin a quilting project or bring unfinished work. Work individually with the instructor and feed off the energy of classmates. Focus on developing designs for large quilts and conquering technical issues. Demonstrations of advanced techniques and design exercises will be incorporated into every class. We’ll cover elements of composition that impact design such as shape, proportion, scale, balance, repetition and color. Build on your repeat printing skills and leave with beautiful yardage and the confidence to produce designs on your own. Come prepared to work with your favorite materials.
