really big BUT, when you start to go to
interviews after six months away from the work
place, your response to interview questions
become slower, less relevant and responsive in
comparison to someone who is still in work and
it shows.
Quite often people take 12 months out if they
can afford to, but time and technology move so
quickly in the working world it can then be
difficult to re-enter at the same level. When you
apply for roles at the same or even a lower level,
being told you are over qualified can become
very demoralising, especially if you take it
personally in the early stages of re-entering the
job market after 6 or 12 months out of work. This
then impacts as you go for further interviews,
anticipating rejection before the interview has
even begun.
So what should you do? Taking some time
out is acceptable and we wouldn’t be human if
we didn’t want to take a holiday after the trauma
of going through the redundancy experience
whether this is after working for many years at
one company or just a few years. Expecting and
experiencing emotional highs and lows is very
normal and many people do go through high and
low days. Elation that it is all over and sheer
panic of what is going to happen next is perfectly
normal and happens to almost everyone. If you
have decided you are going to carry on working
but do want a break then a couple of weeks to a
month is fine but if you really want to get back
into the world of work I would recommend you
make a plan and stick to it. For example, two
weeks holiday, a couple of weeks to get some
urgent jobs done, then back into focus because it
can still take another month or so to find
suitable employment.
Part of your plan has to be where you are
going to ‘work in the house’ to do your job
searching. By this I mean your location. Do you
have an office at home or will you work in
the dining room or at the kitchen table?
