STARTING AGAIN

riday started out like every day had for the last
six months since Charlie had been made
redundant. At first it was fine. Jobs around the
house got done, the garden was sorted and it
was nice to visit friends and pick the kids up from
school. Time went really quickly, as did the money,
even though they were careful.
Signing on at the Jobcentre was not as bad as
he thought, once he had completed the processes
and arranged his initial appointment but the ‘once
a fortnight’ visits soon started to become more
challenging. What had he done in the last two
weeks to seek employment? What could he show
the advisor? He knew they had a job to do but the

work he was looking for was not so easy to come
by locally and it wasn’t going to be advertised in
the local papers – so that box wouldn’t be ticked
when the question was asked and he couldn’t lie.
He knew he wouldn’t be able to tick some of the
other boxes the adviser would ask either and his
normal stride became half steps towards the door
with the knowledge he needed to do something
about this – but what?
When you have been made redundant or lost
your job for what ever reason it is essential that you
treat your search for a new role as your ‘day job’,
spending your normal working day doing just that.
