Richard Allen Cultural
Center and Museum
The Richard Allen Cultural Center (Museum)
opened its doors in 1992 - across the street
from the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church which
was part of the Underground Railroad. The
center is home to General Colin Powell
memorabilia, relics of the Underground
Railroad and Buffalo Soldier artifacts. It
is the depository of a distinguished Black
Dignity Portrait Collection of photographs
from the 1800s to 1950s. Tours of the Buffalo
Soldier Monument and a walking tour of the
Underground RailRoad in historic downtown
Leavenworth are available by contacting the
center. Monday-Friday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. or
Saturday by appointment. Admission charged.

University of
Saint Mary
Founded by the Sisters of Charity of
Leavenworth, this property was originally a
boarding school for young women in 1859,
then a women’s junior college in 1923.
Today, it’s a fully-accredited co-ed university.
Visitors are welcome to visit the DePaul
Library’s Special Collections which feature a
Sacred Scripture Collection, Abraham Lincoln
Collection and Heritage Collection of English
and American Literature.
