was born . The two were heartbroken by the depth of poverty in Lusaka , and they began to pray about how God could use them to make a difference .
God gave them the opportunity to provide a place for Hope and many other kids in Zambia to get a good meal , a good night ’ s sleep , and a quality education .
In December 2012 , they opened Arise Home . For the first time , eight kids ( including Hope ) had their own beds to sleep in and loving housemothers to tuck them in at night . In 2016 , thanks to many donors , a second home was opened . Kershaw ’ s Challenge is now doing great work in the lives of children not only in Zambia but also in Los Angeles , Dallas , and the Dominican Republic . Clayton knows his ability to throw a baseball is given by God , and “ Baseball is a gift . It is a way we can give back to help those in need ,” he said . “ Because of baseball , we are blessed with a lot of exposure , and therefore , we have a platform to bring attention to the needs of others .”
The group ’ s website states the nonprofit is a “ faith-based , others-focused organization . We exist to encourage people to use whatever God-given passion or talent they have to make a difference and give back to people in need . We want to empower people to use their spheres of influence to impact communities positively and to expand God ’ s Kingdom .”
Hope showed up in many ways the day Clayton and Ellen met a little girl in Lusaka , Zambia . Hope was shown to be a real person , but she also symbolized a real need — one
God put right in front of them . To their credit , they opened their hearts to God ’ s guidance and allowed Him to work through them .
What about you ? Has God placed the needs of others right in front of you ? You don ’ t have to be a major league pitcher to make a major league difference . Where is God calling you to help someone near you ? Your challenge today is to meet Kershaw ’ s Challenge . Find someone to help in your sphere of influence or in your community and then see what amazing things God will do in and through you . Just like Clayton and Ellen , you might just find that Hope comes in many forms , and it always shows up when you need it the most .
Step Up to the Plate How can you inspire those in your circle or on your team ?
Show you care . Simple phrases like “ How are you today ?” or “ Have a great afternoon ” are fine , but they are often said out of routine . Instead , take a vested interest in someone ’ s life and invite that person for coffee . Spend time with them , listen ,
