Low Cost , Scalable Desalination and Water Treatment Technologies
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Scalable , low cost , energy-efficient , and non-toxic technologies to serve the large portion of the world ’ s population in need of clean water
Desalination Berkeley Lab researchers have developed effective , efficient , and reliable desalination technologies that overcome the high cost of bottled water and reverse osmosis treatment and the slow mass transfer and inadequate ion storage capacity of electronic water purifier technologies . In one example , composite resin electrodes achieve ion removal in an energy efficient , environmentally compatible way . For details : Devices for Fresh Water from Ground and Surface Water ( 3121 )
Heavy Metals Remediation By modifying a metal -‐ organic framework ( MOF ) so it binds a given metal ion , a Berkeley Lab heavy metals remediation technology can reach EPA limits from very high ion concentrations . Unlike non -‐ selective chelating agents and absorption technologies , the MOF technology is scalable and tunable . Fluoride Remediation Ashok Gadgil led the development of a low cost , scalable fluoride remediation technology using bauxite material that does not require intensive processing . The technology treats contaminated groundwater to achieve the World Health Organization ( WHO ) 1.5 ppm permissible limit for fluoride in drinking water . For details : Low Cost Fluoride Remediation for Groundwater in Developing Countries ( 2015-‐125 )
Arsenic Remediation Electrochemical arsenic removal systems produce ferric oxide to transform water -‐ borne arsenic -‐ III into arsenic -‐ V , which quickly binds to the ferric oxide to be filtered or settled out . Berkeley Lab has advanced electrochemical arsenic removal by providing a low cost , easily operated technology that accelerates the rate of ferric oxide production .
