End of an Era
It ’ s been more than 60 years since The Anchor Line Bar , originally called Main Street Bar & Cabaret , began serving up drinks and entertainment for the community . While the town ’ s other gay bars have since folded , this local icon survived everything from the COVID-19 pandemic to a destructive fire . But now , that is changing as the space has been sold following the death of co-owner James Nelson in August . He ran the business with the help of his sister , Wendy Nelson , who was hoping the spot could remain a safe space for LGBTQ locals , but that was not in the cards so an important era in the history of the town came to an end when The Anchor Line closed in mid-October . Before closing , the bar also hosted an auction to help raise money to keep operations going and support the bar ’ s various themed nights , including happy hours , drag shows and karaoke .
