ithin a couple days of
arriving in Spain for our
first term as missionaries,
we were blessed to find a beautiful
fully-furnished apartment. “Fullyfurnished” meant silverware, linens,
plates, pictures on the walls—and
even toilet paper! A Spaniard couple
had bought this apartment then a few
months later bought a house in the
country; the wife decided she did not
want to take anything from the apartment—she wanted all new things in
her new home.
Most apartments in Spain came
furnished with a stove, refrigerator,
and washer but no dryer. We had a
tiny utility porch off the kitchen with
a clothesline strung a few inches from
the edge. I inherited my short stature
so this was a challenge for me. It
never failed that a clothing item or
two would slip out of my grasp and
