GALLERIA DELL’ACCADEMIA
The Galleria dell’Accademia is most famous for its sculptures by Michelangelo; in particular the statue of David. However, there are many other artists on display here, so don’t limit yourself to his works. One of my favourite exhibitions was the Museum of Musical Instruments, as kept by the Medici family, showing the evolution of instruments throughout their reign. One piece of advice would be to book your tickets online before visiting the museum, particularly if you are only in Florence for a weekend break, as the pre-paid ticket queues are long, never mind those for the unlucky people without tickets! Be aware that both the Galleria dell’Accademia and the Uffizi are both closed on Mondays, so take this into consideration when planning your time in Florence.
MERCATO CENTRALE
Many people forget to explore the local markets in Italy, which is such a mistake. The Mercato Centrale is held in what is effectively a large warehouse, and which serves some of the best food in Florence. This ranges from fresh fruit to every different type of cuisine you can imagine; you have to try at least one dish from this magical place. Also for students on a budget, this market is a lot cheaper than other places; not only is it affordable, it serves high quality produce whilst the public can watch chefs in action and ask for advice and tips.
PIAZZA SANTA CROCE
One of the most beautiful squares in Florence, this square used to welcome crowds for performances and speeches. It features a monument dedicated to Dante Alighieri, with the square looking onto the beautiful church of Santa Croce, and situated near to the Galleria di Uffizi.
