Shave our Advocate for Bursaries Campaign Dan Heffernan State Advocate SQUIRES STATE BOARD LIAISON Good Works in Jamaica - By the time you have read this article, I will have travelled to Jamaica with a number of Knights and Squires to assist the Missionaries of the Poor. This journey was spearheaded by Squires Director, Joe Bodnar who has made this trip previously. We will be assisting in the various missions as we work with the poor in Kingston, Jamaica. We live in a country of such abundance and peace, I am sure this will be a life-changing event for some of us. This will be an opportunity for us to see firsthand the real daily struggles that many in our world face. In Oct 2013, I was privileged to attend Camp Samac with 100 Squires and Counsellors from 10 Circles around the Province. It was a rewarding experience for me to see first-hand not only the spiritual component of the Squires program being acted upon in their daily activities, but the leadership initiatives that the boys displayed in various team and individual events. If you do not have a Squires Circle in your Council or District, I urge you to contact myself or Joe Bodnar to look into the benefits of having a Squires Circle available to your youth. This program not only provides a positive venue, it also promotes and shapes our leaders of tomorrow in their faith, and encourages membership in the Knights of Columbus in later teen years. Remembering Our Dearly Departed Knights by donating to our State In-Memoriam Program gives one not only personal satisfaction, it assists our own Knights of Columbus Charity. Our Bursary program is fed directly from donations that are made by YOU or your Council which in turn is given out annually to deserving young people for their 1st year of Post-Secondary Education. In addition to providing much needed funds to our struggling students, you also make money for your Council. 25% of the funds generated through the Program go back to the Council to which the deceased member belonged. Approximately 1,200 of our members die annually. If we have In-Memoriam Program Donation cards in each of the funeral homes where these members’ KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ONLINE BULLETIN 12 APRIL 2014
