KING’ S CULTURE

Celebrating Maori Culture

King’ s Kapa Haka excel at Polyfest.
In week three of Term One, the King’ s College Kapa Haka group started preparing for the ASB Polyfest. Targeting 15 March as its performance date, meant they only had a little over four weeks to prepare. It was a huge ask for the boys.
In order to prepare well, the challenge was set for the boys to practice everyday until the performance date, including all weekends and some late evenings. This was a huge challenge for the boys as they had to learn six items, with words to memorise, actions to learn, perform and perfect, songs to sing and haka to execute- all the while maintaining their other school commitments.
On the day, the boys performed extremely well, and did themselves, their families and the College, very proud. In the end King’ s College Kapa Haka walked away with several awards:
Te Arohanui Hawke, James Te Ahuru, Ernie Delamere and Ngataua Hukatai( Averill, 2007- 11) for their on stage assistance and tutoring.
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.

When all the marks were tallied up, King’ s gained second place overall in Division 2, which means they have now qualified for Division 1 in 2014- the first time for the College. This puts us amongst the top 10 schools in Auckland- a very proud moment for the King’ s boys, who were‘ over the moon’ after the final prize giving announcements.
I would like to convey my thanks to all families, staff and students who supported us in whatever way, shape or form, as it all helped us during the weeks of preparation. Special thanks to
