KING’ S STAFF
Successes for College Musicians
News from King’ s Music Department.
2013 has started with a surge of activity and a string of achievements for King’ s College musicians.
Music scholar and viola player Annie HUANG( Year 13) has been accepted into the prestigious New Zealand Secondary Schools Orchestra. This is an ensemble of the highest regard, and Annie is to be congratulated on being selected into the ensemble. Annie will participate in an intense six-day orchestral course, run by the Christchurch Itinerant teachers( an attached unit at Hagley Community College) in the first week of the school holidays, culminating in two public performances.
Music Scholars Louise BURLING( Year 12), Tony ZHANG( Year 12) and Delvan LIN( Year 10) have all passed with distinction in their recent ATCL Diploma examinations in Piano. This Associate of Trinity College London diploma is equivalent in standard to a first year recital at Tertiary Level in an international Music Conservatory. These latest results bring the number of King’ s pianists who have achieved their ATCL diplomas to five, with Arnold LEE( Year 13) and Euwin TAN( Year 11) having achieved theirs in previous years.
King’ s College band The Burtones were selected to open the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’ s recent Summer Matinee Concert at Government House. It was a glorious day and the boys played to a packed audience of 1200 concert-goers. The music was of a very professional level, and the feedback from many members of the audience, as well as the resounding ovation the boys got when they finished, has been very humbling to receive. The band has also received numerous requests for appearances stretching as far as Whitianga on the back of their performance on the day. The band members are Matt OLO- WHAANGA( Year 11), Chas WAKEFIELD( Year 11), Jonathan AOINA( Year 13), Troy DARROW( Year 13), Keneti APA( Year 11), Sioi KAIHAU( Year 11) and Sam BROWN( Year 10).
