Humans of Saint David ’ s - “ Who Am I ?”

During language arts classes , fourth graders reflected upon important aspects of their identity by answering , “ Who am I ?” To celebrate what makes each of us unique , boys composed personal narratives that highlight an important aspect of their identity . The popular blog , Humans of New York , served as a mentor text for the boys to draw inspiration from . When examining the HONY stories , boys noticed aspects of identity featured in each story . They also dug deeper to discuss the “ heart ” of each story , gleaning important life lessons .
During the writing process , boys identified pivotal moments in their lives that contributed to their identities . From “ filmmaker ” to “ traveler ” to “ extreme-sport athlete ,” each boy thought deeply about what they wanted to share about themselves . They learned that through sharing their stories and reading the stories of others , we broaden our perspective and develop understanding for others . Each of us has a story to tell , and in doing so , our words are powerful .
