Picturebooks and
Emotional Intelligence

The teacher trainer started with a
question:
“what
is
Emotional
Intelligence?”, and the group participated
in a discussion about the question.
According
to
Salovery
&
Mayer
“emotional intelligence is the ability to
monitor one’s own and other’s feelings
and emotions, to discriminate among
them and to use this information to guide
ones’ thinking and
actions” (1990,
pg.189). relationships; and self-motivation. The
teacher trainer showed how one can work
the different basic emotion, with
flashcards, games with dice, songs, and
how and why we can use picturebooks.
We can see emotion in the illustrations,
observe how others show and deal with
emotional situations; manage challenge;
learn different strategies and should be
accompanied by a discussion with
children.
Sandie explained that one can divide the
Emotional Intelligence in five difference
strands: self-awareness; managing one’s
emotions;
empathy;
handling Finally, all groups chose a book, read the
story and prepared it, that is, how to tell
the story and which emotion the book was
about. It was a very enjoyable moment.
