KUBES in FLUX
Newly formed Keele University Business and Enterprise Society (KUBES)
had a busy academic year.
It started in February when four of
their committee members attended
the National Association of College
& University Entrepreneurs’ (NACUE)
Conference 2015, the largest student
enterprise conference in the UK. This
year’s workshops ranged from learning
about how students are affected
by the general election, to ways of
increasing student engagement. The
KUBES met some truly inspirational
entrepreneurs including Alan
Radbourne, who in his final year at
university decided to see how much
money he could make from a one
pound coin. His one-year-long project
‘The One Pound Challenge’ made an
incredible profit of £20,000.

Also in February, three KUBES
members, Mike Davies, Josh Slade and
Denice van der Putten, together with
Linh Nguyen, a KMS Masters student,
were invited by Staffordshire Chamber
of Commerce to join their team at the
British Chambers of Commerce Annual
Conference in London. During the
day they networked with influential
In March, KUBES members,
together with fellow KMS student
Xander Freeman, took part in the
national FLUX Business Challenge.
The challenge, set by one of the
competition’s corporate sponsors, was
to create a smart wearable device with
a med-tech application.
KUBES President, Denice van der Putten explained:
“We were able to create an idea which we were incredibly proud of, which was aimed
at asthma sufferers, especially children under the age of 12 who are unable to recognise
the signs of an asthma attack coming on.
Unfortunately we didn’t make it through to the final but we did come joint second,
scoring highly on team work and our meetings with the mentors.”
