Venture / HELLO 17 Academic News T he ‘Leadership in a Liquid Modern World’ workshop was delivered by Professor Mihaela Kelemen, Director of CASIC (Community Animation and Social Innovation Centre). The workshop explored how SME owners could work with their teams to create an imaginative vision for their organisation using the CASIC method of using playful, experiential exercises to create connections between participants, allowing them to step outside their day job as SME leaders. D r Matthew Brannan, Senior Lecturer in Management recently wrote in The Conversation about retail banks. Matthew explained – “In my research into the finance industry, I found that mis-selling can become entrenched and an accepted feature of sales practice. This is despite the existence of compliance departments that are tasked with ensuring fair sales practice, training and emphasis on treating customers fairly and active line management and monitoring of sales activity. Read the full article at theconversation.com G eoff Heath, Honorary Fellow in Accounting, recently attended the launch of the Routledge Guide to Performance Management and Control, the latest volume in the prestigious Routledge Guide series. Geoff’s chapter, co-authored with Dr. James Radcliffe and Professor Paresh Wankhade, is entitled Performance Management in the Public Sector: The case of the English Ambulance Service’. K MS and CASIC PhD student, Yiwen Lin presented a research paper at the 16th International Symposium on New Technologies for Urban Safety of Mega Cities in Asia (USMCA2017). The event was organised under the auspices of the World Bosai Forum/International Disaster and Risk Conference and was held in November in Sendai, Japan. Yiwen’s paper, sponsored by a Sasawaka Foundation grant, reported on fieldwork carried out in 2016 in Minami Sanriku, where Yiwen worked for three months as a volunteer and researched the communities affected by the 2011 Tsunami. Minami Sanriku was rebuilt from within through community based interventions and Yiwen was welcomed back to the area by the Mayor. International Journal of Project Management, vol. 35(5), 913-924 Gary Crowe T he inaugural lecture – 10 years on from the financial meltdown – rediscovering the leadership compass’, a practitioners reflection’ introduced Gary Crowe in his new role of Professor of Practice leading the Mercia Centre for Innovation Leadership in Keele Management School. In his lecture, Gary drew on his professional experience in the financial services industry during the financial meltdown of 2007. He explained how the lessons learnt during this time and his observations as a senior banker are relevant to his new role.
