INTRODUCTION
Externship program gives to the student a real world experience of the court room
environment. It also helps to the student to understand the difference between law
in theoretical bases and law in action. But above all externship program increase
student’s confidence on his/her theoretical knowledge.
I have been in the externship program starting from March 03/2008 e.c up to may
30/2008 e.c. So as to observe diversified cases and to grasp wholestic practical
knowledge, as possible, I had spent half of the externship time in criminal bench
and the rest in civil division.
During my stay at south wollo zone high court I have carried out different tasks
starting from giving a legal brief to judges on appellate or first instance cases and
providing my own reflection on these cases up to writing a court order, decree and
judgment on pending cases. However in the externship program I gave much more
emphasis to observe different court practices.
Accordingly, the first chapter of this report discusses the activities that I have
carried out in south wollo zone high court criminal division. In addition to this it
discuss about different court practices that I have observed in criminal bench. The
second chapter of the report deals about the tasks that I have performed in south
wollo zone high court civil division.
In chapter three I try to discuss the gap between the law and practice. And under
chapter five of the report I try to point out challenges that I encountered during the
externship program. Finally the fifth chapter of this report provides conclusion and
recommendations.
