CHAPTER ONE
ACTIVITIES THAT I HAVE CARRIED OUT AND MY
OBSERVATIONS IN SOUTH WOLLO ZONE HIGH COURT
CRIMINAL BENCH
Section one; Reading of dead files
When I start the externship program in south wollo zone high court, the first task
that I have carried out is reading of dead files. The main rational behind reading
such dead files is to develop my theoretical knowledge on how a certain
pleading(statement of claim or statement of defenseā¦) should be written and how
lists of witnesses and other evidences should be attached. In addition to this
reading of dead files enable me to understand how a court order, decree and
judgment should be written. After increasing a certain value on my theoretical
knowledge regarding legal and formality requirement that should be fulfilled in a
pleading and judgment writing skill I started to observe different court practices.
Section two; case brief
The other task that I have carried out in south wollo zone high court criminal
division is investigating an appellate or direct cases instituted to the court in its
first instant jurisdiction and brief them to the judges. During my stay in the
criminal bench I have investigated 13 appellate criminal cases and 5 direct cases
and brief them to the judges. In addition to briefing I had the chance to provide my
own reflection on these cases and received feedback from the judges.
